Hours after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended Super Metro’s licence, a section of Kenyans, have raised concerns about the alleged defiance by the popular bus company.
Kenyans on Thursday, March 20, took to social media to sound alarm about the continued operation of Super Metro minibuses on some of the major highways within Nairobi city.
In particular, a Super Metro minibus full of passengers was spotted plying along the Thika Super Highway while another was recorded en route to Mombasa Road.
The move comes despite NTSA cautioning Kenyans against using the company vehicle with traffic police officers directed to impound any found operating.
However, Super Metro owners on Thursday afternoon condemned the Safety Authority accusing it of a blanket condemnation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization or Society (SACCO).
Addressing the press in Nairobi, the company bosses faulted NTSA for allegedly failing to conduct thorough investigations into the recent demise of a passenger before today’s suspension.
While lamenting the suspension, the SACCO bosses warned of looming mass unemployment but assured Kenyans that they would appeal the decision.
“We are very disappointed to realise that there is a lack of condemnation on SACCOs, we are worried by NTSA’s interference of a company with over 600 vehicles which are worth over Ksh1.4 billion,” noted a Super Metro boss.
“This Sacco has over 500 owners who have families to feed. As a federation, we have already done our investigations to find out what happened. Up to now, no passenger has recorded a statement to claim that the passenger was indeed pushed,” he added.
NTSA on Thursday morning announced the suspension of Super Metro vehicles over what the Authority labelled as non-compliance with the Public Service Vehicle Regulations.
"This is to notify the Public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator licence until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014 and other set conditions," NTSA announced.
"Members of the public are cautioned against boarding vehicles belonging to Super Metro Limited. The Traffic Department is required to impound vehicles belonging to the Company found operating contrary to the suspension."
