Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, on Sunday, March 30, met with Kitui County Assembly leaders to discuss key areas of collaboration just days after meeting with President William Ruto.

In a statement, Mutua outlined 10 key areas discussed in the session and agreements met, including opposing any impeachment motions against governors from the three Ukambani regions of Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni.

He noted that supporting any of these impeachment motions would "create confusion and chaos" instead of fostering much-needed loyalty.

"I do not and will not support any impeachment of leaders in Ukambani counties. I stand against the impeachment of County Assembly Speakers and Governors, including H.E. Malombe of Kitui, H.E. Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos, and H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Jr. of Makueni," he declared.

The CS also noted that the region has never been in opposition and has always aligned with the government, as demonstrated by some of their legendary leaders like Mulu Mutisya and Paul Ngei.

"Ukambani was never in the opposition. Even H.E. Raila Odinga understands that staying in the opposition can be detrimental to his supporters’ fortunes. President William Ruto is open to accommodating all for the prosperity of the nation," he stated.

Central to their discussions was unity, as he highlighted both the importance of unity in the region and also a commitment to travel across the counties to spread awareness on it.

CS Mutua further emphasised the need to embrace a culture of tolerance over dictatorship, noting that no Ukambani leader, despite party affiliation, should be persecuted for meeting or talking to fellow Ukambani leaders.

The leaders also discussed the need to maintain respect among the leaders and the need to mentor and encourage upcoming leaders to secure a succession plan.

In preparation for the upcoming trip by President Ruto to launch projects, the leaders agree to work as a team regardless of rank as CSs, governors, Principal Secretaries, senators, MPs, MCAs, clergy, and other professionals.

The leaders also agreed on the urgent need for the region to take affirmative action to bridge the gap with other parts of Kenya as politics of poverty have been detrimental to the region, making it among the poorest regions in the country.

Finally, the CS assured the Kitui County team of employment opportunities by updating them on employment opportunities, especially from the Kazi Majuu initiative.
