The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued advisories to Kenyans caught in the devastating earthquakes that hit the Southeast Asian countries over the weekend.

In a statement by the Principal Secretary of Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu, the government has expressed its deep concern for the citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and The Kingdom of Thailand after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck the two nations.

''The Government of the Republic of Kenya expresses deep concern for its citizens and citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and The Kingdom of Thailand following the recent powerful earthquake that struck the two countries. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this disaster,'' a statement from the Ministry signed by Njogu read in part.

In its advisory, the government of Kenya has advised Kenyans in the two foreign nations to stay alert and monitor updates of local news and official alerts for real-time information on aftershocks and emergency measures.

Kenyans have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to heavily impacted areas and ensure personal safety.

''If in a damaged or unstable building, move to a safe, open area if possible; Be vigilant about falling debris, landslides, or damaged infrastructure,'' a statement from the Ministry added.

Further, the government urged Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand to register with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission.

''Register with the Kenyan Embassy- If not already registered, provide your contact details to the Kenya Embassy in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission for assistance and updates. Contact: Hotline: +66990745752 Email: bangkok@mfa.go.ke.''

Additionally, Kenyans have been urged to follow local authorities' instructions as well as adhere strictly to evacuation orders, shelter advisories, and safety guidelines issued by local disaster management agencies.

Kenyans have also been urged to check on their fellow Kenyans and reach out to them, especially students, diaspora workers, and vulnerable individuals, to ensure their well-being.

''We continue to closely monitor the situation and urge all citizens to please remain safe and maintain communication with the authorities,'' the government added.

An earthquake hit central Myanmar near Mandalay on March 28, 2025. The tremors were felt across Southeast Asia, including in neighboring Thailand, where significant damage occurred.

Records show that approximately 400 Kenyans live in Thailand. However, the exact number of Kenyans in Myanmar has been an issue of concern to the government since a majority of them are reported to have been trafficked to the nation.
