At least two people have reportedly died, while another is nursing critical injuries following a road accident along the Nairobi-Kangundo Road in Matungulu, Machakos County.
Witnesses who spoke to the press on Tuesday morning revealed that the victims were travelling on a speeding motorcycle when it hit a personal car that was heading in the same direction.
According to a police report, the victims of the accident included two pillion passengers and the cyclist. While one passenger and the cyclist died on the spot, another passenger sustained injuries.
Videos of the accident obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the Toyota Voxy vehicle damaged on the side while the motorcycle was seen lying beside the road.
Moments after the accident, police officers from Matungulu Police Station arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and commenced investigations.
The bodies of the deceased were later taken to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital, awaiting identification and post-mortem. Meanwhile, the car and the motorcycle were towed to Tala Police Station.
Commenting on the incident, a resident revealed that two motorcyclists were racing along the busy highway when one of the cyclists lost control and hit the side of a personal car.
“Both the vehicle and the motorcycle were coming from Nairobi towards Machakos, but because the motorcycle was at high speed, it lost control and hit the side of the vehicle,” narrated a local.
Addressing journalists, the residents called on the government to intervene and expand the highway to curb further accidents, which they claimed have been prevalent along the busy road.
The latest incident comes just a day after seven family members died in a road crash along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway in Nakuru County.
According to a police report, the accident, which took place on Monday, March 31, occurred after a Land Cruiser ferrying the seven lost control and rammed into an oncoming trailer.
The deceased included four children and three adults. A relative of the victims revealed that three of the minors belonged to the same family, while the fourth minor was the son of a family worker.
