Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has directed police officers to immediately commence detailed investigations into an accident that claimed the lives of four people, including three pupils.

The governor, in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, ordered traffic officers to expedite the probe, establish the cause of the crash, and take appropriate action against individuals whose mistakes could have led to the accident.

The directive follows a road crash involving a truck and a 14-seater matatu that was ferrying pupils of the Ober Boys Boarding School who were travelling home for the April holidays.

During the accident, 4 people died, while 14 others sustained critical injuries but were rushed to the Nyabondo Mission Hospital and are currently recuperating.

The conductor of the ill-fated matatu also died in the accident that occurred along the Sondu-Katito highway in Kibwuon, a few kilometers from Sondu Township in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

While calling for a quick investigation into the accident, the Kisumu governor appealed to motorists to take caution and adhere to professionalism while ferrying passengers.

“Unfortunately, we have lost such young souls in a tragic accident that could have been avoided had the drivers of the two vehicles taken the required caution and adhered to professionalism,” Nyo’ng’o said.

“I wish to appeal to the police to immediately launch detailed investigations into this accident to establish the cause and take appropriate action against individuals whose mistakes may have led to the crash,” he added.

Commenting on the accident, Nyakach OCPD Lairanus Odinga disclosed that the accident occurred on a sharp bend and that the parked truck had no signs.

According to him, the vehicle had picked up the pupils from the school moments after the institution's closing ceremony and was on the way to drop the pupils in Kisumu town when the crash occurred.

Meanwhile, 2025 statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that road accidents remain a crucial issue in the country, with cyclists and pedestrians accounting for the most number of casualties.

As per the NTSA, at least 13 people are killed in road accidents daily, with most of these crashes attributed to drunk driving, driver distraction, speeding, and fatigue.
