At least four people, including three pupils, have been confirmed dead following a road accident in the Kibuon area of Nyakach, along the Sondu-Katito highway.

Reports indicate that the accident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, took place after a 14-seater matatu lost control and rammed into an oncoming truck that was ferrying sugarcane.

However, the residents, who were on high alert, quickly rushed to the scene and began retrieving those trapped under the wreckage before they were rushed to the Nyabondo Hospital.

During the accident, several people were injured, including pupils from Ober Boys Primary School, who were heading to school when the matatu collided with the truck.

Footage of the scene showed the matatu extensively damaged, with a broken windscreen, seats, and windows, while the truck remained intact with minimal damage.

While the number of those injured is yet to be established, area traffic police officers have since arrived at the scene, with investigations ongoing into the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the accident, which occurred around 6 a.m., resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes as police attempted to clear the road.

The accident adds to the rising number of road carnages witnessed across the country since the year began. The latest incident comes just two days after seven people died in a separate road crash along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway in Nakuru County.

According to a police report, the seven accident victims were family members who were travelling from a memorial service when their car hit an oncoming trailer.

The crash, which occurred on Sunday evening, happened when a private car attempted to overtake another vehicle and suddenly rammed into a trailer.

The deceased included four children and three adults. A relative who spoke to the press revealed that three of the children belonged to the same family, while the fourth child was the child of the family's worker.

In 2025, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) report indicated that road accidents remain a crucial issue, with data revealing that at least 13 people are killed in road crashes daily.

The most vulnerable road users, according to NTSA, include cyclists, who contribute the largest casualties, followed by pedestrians, three-wheeler vehicles and normal vehicles.
