Tension gripped residents near Coast General Hospital in Mombasa after cracks appeared in a residential building, sparking fears of collapse.

Occupants of the 11-storey structure were forced to evacuate as concerns grew over the potential disaster following heavy rains that have pounded the region over the last few weeks.

Mombasa County officials, alongside national security teams led by Coast Regional Commander Ali Nuno, arrived at the scene to enforce the evacuation.

Preliminary assessments indicated that the building was constructed without adhering to proper guidelines, putting residents at risk.

Mombasa County Fire and Disaster Chief Officer Ibrahim Basafar, who oversaw the evacuation, stated that authorities were compelled to act after the building's basement caved in.

''You see this here; one flow has already carved, including the basement of the building. Already the building is slanted, and if you closely observe, the structure did not go up with the right dimensions,'' he said.

The residents were evacuated at night, and the building is said to have been under construction despite being occupied.

At the time of publishing, neither the Mombasa County Government nor the national government had issued an update on the fate of the building.

Authorities also raised concerns about the immediate risk posed to the nearby Coast General Hospital. Officials warned that if the structure collapsed, it could potentially impact the hospital.

The coastal region has been faced with constant disasters from the collapse of buildings. One person was trapped after a building under construction came crumbling down in the Majengo area of Mombasa County.

The Monday, November 11 incident saw a storey building, which had barely reached the first floor, collapse on one side.

In another incident, five people lost their lives in a freak incident on Monday, 2 December, after being struck by a collapsing perimeter wall in Miritini, Jomvu, Mombasa County.

The tragedy occurred around 2pm when the wall gave way, crushing the victims as they sought shelter from the rain.
