Following a raid and subsequent apprehension of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on Tuesday morning, the anti-graft commission EACC has revealed it recovered millions of shillings in the governor's residence.

According to EACC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdi Mohamud, a total of Ksh13 million was recovered in cash at the home of the governor, amounts which the graft body believes are proceeds of unscrupulous dealings.

Additionally, the detectives managed to recover USD13,000, about Ksh1,685,320.

Mohamud revealed that it will use the money recovered and other shreds of evidence before them to prosecute individuals linked to the graft allegations.

''Today's operation has resulted in the recovery of critical evidentiary material to support ongoing investigations. This includes the seizure of Ksh12 million and Ksh1,685,320 (USD 13,000) in cash from the residence of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, which is believed to be proceeds of graft," a statement from the EACC boss, Mohamud, read in part.

''Upon conclusion of the investigation, the findings will guide the appropriate course of action, which may include the prosecution of any individuals found culpable, the forfeiture of unexplained assets, and the confiscation of proceeds linked to graft.''

Wamatangi was apprehended at his home on Tuesday morning and escorted to the commission's headquarters under tight security.

The under-siege governor was seen waving to the locals from the back seat of an SUV as the detectives escorted him to their offices for interrogation.

EACC confirmed that the operation formed part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial and procurement malpractices within the County Government of Kiambu.

Also in custody with the governor are nine other senior county officials who face allegations of conflict of interest, procurement irregularities, and misuse of office in the awarding of a Ksh230 million contract for the supply, delivery, installation, testing, training, commissioning, and support services of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

The officials are also accused of engaging in business with the county government and receiving payments amounting to Ksh1.5 billion through irregular procurement processes and fictitious supplies, in violation of public finance management and procurement laws.

Those apprehended alongside the governor include the County Secretary, CECs for Finance and Lands, the Chief Officer for Finance, Directors in the Supply Chain and Revenue departments, a clerical officer, and a director of the company awarded the contract.
