The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has kick-started an independent investigation after a woman was left nursing injuries after allegedly being assaulted in public by a police officer.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 22, the IPOA chairperson, Ahmed Issack, confirmed that the authority has reached out to the family of the victim, who is currently receiving medical attention at the Narok Level 5 Hospital.
"Following widely circulated images on social media depicting injuries sustained by a woman, allegedly inflicted by a police officer, IPOA reached out to the affected family yesterday, Monday, 21 April 2025," he said.
"An independent investigation into the matter has been launched, and preliminary findings by our Rapid Response team indicate that the victim is receiving treatment at Narok Level 5 Hospital," he added.
If the said officer is found guilty of assaulting the woman, IPOA has assured that it will issue appropriate recommendations to ensure that he is held accountable.
"The Authority remains committed to conducting the investigation with impartiality as it delivers its mandate of holding the police accountable and working towards the attainment of the provision of Article 244 of the Constitution," he stated.
According to the assaulted woman, the police officer based at Naroosura Police Station in Narok County hit her with blunt objects on her rear parts after she went to the station to seek help regarding a motorcycle she had jointly purchased with her husband.
The woman claims that the officer may have colluded with her husband and his side chick to have her assaulted.
According to the woman, the officer allegedly turned on her, assaulting her in public and leaving her humiliated and with injuries.
According to reports, it took the interventions of her neighbours to save her life, who then rushed her to the Naroosura Health Centre.
The woman, who claims to have filed an assault case at the same police station, said that she still fears failing to get justice.
According to the woman, the case was dismissed at the police station, and it only took the intervention of other senior administrative officials for her to get an OB number.
