Echoes of War playwright Cleophas Malala has invited Kenyans to audition for roles in the play.
The audition call comes in the wake of controversy surrounding the production, which was originally set to be performed by Butere Girls before facing criticism from some leaders over its theme.
In an official statement, Malala announced that auditions will run from April 22 to May 5.
“If you are an actor, love the stage, and have the confidence to own a role, this is your moment,” read part of the announcement.
To participate, interested Kenyans with a zeal for theatre arts, talent, and the confidence to perform in front of a large crowd are encouraged to go through the script on Malala's TikTok page, choose a character they can play, then record a 30-second video playing the role.
Participants are then required to post the video on Instagram and TikTok, tag Malala, and await the final shortlist of talents to be invited for physical auditions.
The call for the auditions comes days after the former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General emphasised that the production would feature top adult actors selected from across the country, who will showcase the play at a public event.
Responding to the audition calls, Kiambu County Senator Karungo wa Thiong'o expressed interest in auditioning, revealing that he might audition for one character to awaken his talent.
''I think I should audition for a role in this play - to awaken my high school talent! Sijui ni audition kama Sultan?,'' the senator wrote.
The Echoes of War play surrounds the leadership theme that sparked controversy among Kenyan leaders.
Set in the fictional Royal Velvet Emirates, the play follows Mustafa, a tech-savvy youth whose innovations clash with the authoritarian rule of the Sultan, leading to a dramatic confrontation between tradition and progress.
As tensions rise, the warring generations must find a way to reconcile before their society collapses.
The theme that portrayed the war between Kenyan Gen Z and leaders led to its initial ban for political sensitivity.
