President William Ruto has appointed Professor Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President.
In an official statement on Wednesday, April 30, the president revealed that Mutua brings on board vast experience in the constitutional knowledge needed in his government.
''I have appointed Prof Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Prof Mutua brings a wealth of experience in legal, constitutional, and human rights matters," Ruto wrote.
''Congratulations, Prof Mutua. I welcome you to join a dynamic team of public servants in the implementation of our Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda," the president continued.
Mutua will play a crucial role in shaping Kenya's constitutional and governance policies in his new role. He will be advising Ruto on constitutional matters, supporting legal reforms, and promoting human rights and the rule of law.
Additionally, Makau will contribute to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), ensuring constitutional compliance in the administration's flagship economic initiatives.
The long-time political commentator said, "I am grateful to His Excellency President William Ruto for appointing me Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President."
Adding, "Mr President, I promise to serve you and our fellow citizens with diligence, honour, and distinction."
Makau joins the long list of leaders from the opposition who have benefited from the broad-based government between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Makau has been a long-time ally and supporter of Raila. He served as the spokesperson for Raila's Azimio la Umoja campaign during the 2022 Kenyan presidential elections.
He has consistently praised Raila's vision for transforming Kenya and has been vocal in defending his political strategies.
The professor who has served as a professor at the SUNY Buffalo School of Law until 2014 has always been critical of Ruto's leadership.
Leaders drawn from both the Kenya Kwanza and ODM sides have flocked to social media to congratulate Makau on his new role.
"An excellent choice! Congratulations, Prof Makau Mutua, '' Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing'oei wrote.
His appointment comes barely a week after President Ruto appointed Jaoko Oburu Odinga, son of Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, to the position of Special Advisor, Economic Empowerment, and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Executive Office of the President.
