There was drama in Elgeyo Marakwet town as hundreds of students from Moi Girls' High School, Kapsowar, walked out of their institution in protest.
The girls, still dressed in full school uniforms, left the school premises and walked towards Kapsowar town, screaming and chanting slogans that exposed their frustrations.
Learning at the school was temporarily disrupted, as the students marched out of their school, with reports suggesting they were protesting against their school principal.
In images and videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the students can be heard chanting "Our principal is hard-headed", reflecting their dissatisfaction with the school's leadership.
Despite emotions running high, the girls remained peaceful during their walkout, and there was no vandalism involved either in or outside the institution.
However, it remains unclear why exactly the students want their school principal transferred.
The students' protest took Kapsowar's town by surprise, especially given the school’s longstanding reputation for academic excellence and exemplary discipline.
With a mean grade of 7.73 (B minus) in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, Kapsowar Girls was among the top 200 best schools in the country.
Incidents of students taking matters into their own hands in protest against a school's administration are not uncommon in recent weeks. On May 12, learning at St Teresa's Bikeke Boys High School in Trans Nzoia County was paralysed as the students went on strike, demanding the removal of their principal.
The students alleged increased intimidation from the school's hierarchy as they fell out with the principal, who was only posted to the school earlier in the year.
In a separate incident on March 26, a section of parents stormed Kakuyuni Boys Secondary School in Malindi, demanding the removal of the school principal.
Led by Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi, the parents accused the Principal of mismanagement of the school and blamed him for the dismal performance witnessed in the previous national exams.
