The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has given those whose land has been affected by its projects in Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, and in Isinya, Kajiado County, 30 days to collect their compensation.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 20, the agency said the landowners, whom it described as absent, have not followed up on their compensation and have not responded to letters that KETRACO has been sending them regarding the matter.

The 132kV Sultan Hamud - Loitoktok (SHL) and the 220kV Isinya – Konza (IK) Transmission Lines, have since been completed.

KETRACO urged the land owners, described as project-affected persons (PAPs), to contact the agency as soon as possible for purposes of identification and compensation.

The notice was issued in light of the landowners not having any contact with KETRACO, despite previous publications in the Kenya Gazette and meetings organized in the project areas.

In the notice, KETRACO directed that proof of ownership of the affected land would be a requirement before any compensation was paid.

Even so, those who will not respond to the notice within the specified time will have their compensation set aside for payment when they present their claims for the same.

In the notice, five absentee landowners in the 132kV Sultan Hamud - Loitoktok (SHL) transmission line were highlighted, with the acreage at 45 acres.

The high-voltage power line, built for Ksh2.8 billion, was set to improve electricity supply in Kajiado and Makueni counties, allowing residents and businesses in the area access to a stable and reliable electricity supply.

On the other hand, eight absentee landowners were in focus in the 220kV Isinya – Konza (IK) transmission line. The owners’ land totals 27 acres, with the project costing Ksh1.6 billion financed by the Government of Kenya and EXIM Bank.

The transmission line operates at 220kV and spans approximately 40 kilometers, connecting the Isinya substation in Kajiado County to the Konza substation in Machakos County.

The project includes the construction of a 400/220kV–350MVA substation at Nairobi East, aimed at providing an alternative path for additional capacity.

KETRACO urged all affected persons to reach out to a specialised team handling compensation claims and provided contacts for the landowners to call.

“All listed landowners, agents, beneficiaries, or estate administrators should immediately contact the resettlement action plan (RAP) management team for further guidance,” KETRACO stated.
