The High Court in Nairobi has issued a conservatory order suspending the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)'s decision to expel Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the party.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi, in a notice dated Wednesday, May 21, halted Orwoba's expulsion and her subsequent replacement pending the hearing and determination of the matter.
"That pending hearing and determination of this Application, a conservatory order is hereby issued suspending the implementation of the decision of the UDA Party Disciplinary Committee dated 16/05/2025 expelling the petitioner herein as a member of the UDA party and a nominated Senator," read the court ruling.
In the application filed under the certificate of urgency, the judge ordered the matter to be mentioned on June 3, 2025, during which the court would give further directions.
The UDA Party, on Monday, May 19, expelled Orwoba from the political outfit following her alleged failure to appear before the disciplinary committee following her summoning.
Addressing journalists, the party Secretary General Hassan Omar said the decision was reached after extensive consultation and that it was in line with Article 29 of the party Constitution.
"Under Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution, and having exhaustively deliberated on the matters before it, the Disciplinary Committee has resolved that Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership of the party with immediate effect," Omar declared.
"While the UDA party upholds the values of freedom of expression, fidelity and loyalty to Party ideals are fundamental to its constitution and to further consolidate our multiparty politics by strengthening political parties," the UDA Sec Gen said.
In the presser, the UDA Principal announced that Orwoba would no longer enjoy any privileges accorded to party members, nor represent or act on behalf of the party.
Meanwhile, her expulsion was heavily linked to her participation in the former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's homecoming event in Kisii County, allegedly violating the party's code of conduct.
Since attending the opposition leader's event, Orwoba has been facing mounting pressure from the UDA Party members, who termed her action as gross misconduct.
On Wednesday morning, she formally lost her Senatorial seat after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi gazetted her seat as vacant. The gazette came a day after the court declined to stop her expulsion from UDA.
