One person died while four others suffered serious injuries following an accident along Thika Road, near Pangani.
Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the accident involved several private cars.
Although details of the accident remain scant, reports indicated that the driver of one of the private vehicles died on the spot, while the other occupants of his vehicle suffered severe injuries.
Emergency responders, who went to the scene to assist the injured, had to call for more assistance due to the seriousness of the accident.
“Kindly, we need emergency ambulances at Muthaiga to save the lives of four people who are seriously injured; our ambulance is responding to another accident involving a boda boda rider,” responders from Sikika Road Safety requested.
The accident caused heavy traffic to and from the Nairobi CBD. Motorists were also advised to use alternative routes where possible, as efforts to clear the road went on.
The accident comes barely a week after 22 people suffered severe injuries after a public service vehicle (PSV) overturned in Dedan Kimathi Ward, Tetu Constituency, Nyeri County.
The PSV, which had been previously captured swerving recklessly on Thika Road, lost control during its journey to Nyeri before the accident occurred.
Those injured were taken to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital, said the Red Cross, following the accident.
The rate of heightened accidents in the country continues to put road safety in the spotlight. In 2024 alone, over 4,300 people lost their lives on Kenyan roads, although this marked a slight decline, concerns are still being raised over the accidents.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, reckless driving is the major cause of these accidents. Drivers have been accused of speeding, reckless overtaking, drunk driving, failure by pedestrians to use designated crossings, and poor road conditions in certain areas.
