Calls for Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s resignation continue to intensify following sharp criticism from Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, who has questioned his ability to handle security matters.

Citing the recent shooting of Catholic priest Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett in Kerio Valley, Wamuchomba accused Murkomen of failing to address insecurity in bandit-prone areas, despite previously condemning the former administration for similar shortcomings.

According to the MP, Murkomen had performed better as a vocal critic rather than as a government official, stating that he should just resign.

"The killing of the Catholic father by Bandits is Heartbreaking. Murkomen should just resign," Wamuchomba said.

Wamuchomba's calls come barely three days after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei accused Murkomen of being unfit for the docket.

In a separate outburst during senate proceedings on Wednesday, followed by a strong-worded post on X, Cherargei condemned Murkomen for his handling of the recent banditry, terrorist, and violent attacks witnessed in various parts of the country.

“What I saw two years ago about CS Murkomen’s incompetence can now be seen! At least incompetence in roads means that it can be fixed later, but incompetence in internal security means lives are lost that cannot be recovered!” Cherargei said while accusing the Interior CS of incompetence.

Apart from leaders, members of the public and social media critics have also pushed for his resignation, particularly over alleged incompetence. Many have questioned his performance as insecurity cases continue to increase in the country.

This is not the first time pressure has mounted on the CS to resign. While he served as the Transport CS, he was accused of incompetence with leaders and Kenyans calling for his resignation.

The former Transport CS defended himself, blaming inadequate funding in the docket for delayed projects. He downplayed the resignation calls.

Now serving in the security docket, the CS continues to grapple with the same challenges, as growing concerns over rising insecurity fuel tension across the country. Kenyans are increasingly alarmed by the worsening situation, demanding urgent and decisive action to restore safety.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to national security, assuring Kenyans of their safety as he mourned Father Bett. He emphasised that his government is focused on protecting not only Kerio Valley residents but the entire country.
