National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has directed the Administration and Internal Security Committee chairman, Gabriel Tongoyo, to produce an interim report on the killing of blogger Albert Ojwang within the next 48 hours.

During a heated session in the House on Tuesday, Wetang'ula had to contend with a myriad of grievances from MPs, who joined the country in condemning the death of Ojwang.

Ojwang passed away on Sunday, June 8, with an autopsy report confirming the late social media influencer's injuries were inflicted by a third party.

Nyando MP Jared Okello weighed in on the matter as he sought a statement from the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security regarding the circumstances surrounding Ojwang's death.

Okello's demand was seconded by other lawmakers, who questioned the state of the country's security agencies while demanding action against officers involved in the late Ojwang's apprehension.

Amid pressure from lawmakers, Wetang'ula issued a way forward, tasking Tongoyo to issue a preliminary report on investigations into Ojwang's death by Thursday.

"This matter is causing a lot of anxiety, and the explanations coming out sound like a Steve Biko Story," the Speaker said.

He added, "I want to direct the chairman of security to bring a preliminary report to the house on Thursday at 2:30 to inform the house and the country on the progress made in the investigations and some response to the issues raised by Jared Okello on behalf of other members who have issues on this."

Incidentally, the 2025/2026 budget is also set to be read on Thursday, June 12. Wetangula, noting the urgency of the case surrounding Ojwang, said there would be time spared at the house to hear the National Assembly Security Committee Chair's report.

"I know Thursday is budget day, but we have half an hour before budget starts. You will bring a preliminary report and statement to the house at 2:30," Wetangula reiterated.

Among leaders who condemned the circumstances surrounding Ojwang's death was Raila Odinga, who expressed concern over the growing list of young Kenyans who have lost their lives in unclear circumstances.

The ODM boss demanded a speedy conclusion to investigations into the death of Ojwang, which was shrouded in mystery up until Tuesday.

"A speedy and credible closure to this latest incident of injustice in the hands of the police, alongside the many others that we have been pursuing since 2023, is not optional," Raila reiterated on Tuesday.
