The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has dismissed allegations that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga called for Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat's reinstatement.
This is after ODM on Tuesday morning flagged a viral social media post purporting that its party leader allegedly demanded President William Ruto's intervention to restore Lagat's authority.
The post, which was flagged as 'fake' by the ODM, claimed that Odinga defended Lagat, citing that the latter only made a legitimate legal complaint after he was defamed.
According to the misleading post, Raila claimed that Lagat did nothing wrong and that the Head of State and the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, should immediately intervene to ensure Lagat resumes duty.
"Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat did nothing wrong. He only exercised his civic duty to make a legal complaint after he was defamed," the flagged post read in part.
It went on to add, "I call upon the president and the inspector general of police to reinstate him, as no investigation has pointed out to him. Real criminals in Albert Ojwang's case should be brought to book."
ODM was forced to clarify the matter after a section of Kenyans expressed concerns over the post, with some online users calling on Odinga's party to set the record straight.
The clarification also comes on the back of a similar scenario where the party was forced to address allegations purporting that the former Prime Minister pleaded with youths to cancel protests planned for Tuesday, June 17.
In a brief statement on Monday, June 16, ODM flagged a viral social media post claiming that Odinga had cautioned youths against being lured into violence over Albert Ojwang's death.
The fake post alleged that Raila held a conversation with President Ruto, who assured him that investigations were underway to bring all the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.
Albert Ojwang's gruesome death in police custody has, for the past ten days, attracted backlash from Kenyans who have come out to demand justice for the deceased.
However, President William Ruto yesterday held a phone conversation with Albert's father, Meshack Ojwang and donated Ksh2 million to support the grieving family.
