Former National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Geoffrey Mwangi has decried a political witch hunt after attending an intense grilling by officers from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Mwangi revealed that he had received a call from the DCI Nakuru branch on Monday, informing him to appear at the offices on Thursday, July 3.

Heeding the call, Mwangi appeared and was grilled for allegedly orchestrating the chaos witnessed in Nakuru during the June 25 protests. The ex-CEO was also accused of actively planning and financing similar chaos for the upcoming July 7 protests.

''I am here today because I was summoned. They read my charges, alleging that I have been meeting and have been planning meetings with demonstrators, which, of course, is false,'' Mwangi said.

According to the former CEO, the allegations are political witch hunts aimed at deterring him from backing out of his gubernatorial aspirations.
He has, however, maintained that such moves would not intimidate him nor his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP party).

''Kenya is a democratic country. We are law-abiding citizens and we cannot be intimidated in our quest to change leadership. It is true that I am an aspiring candidate in this county, and when that time comes, I will be on the ballot; nothing will change that fact,'' Mwangi assured.

The leaders have disclosed that there are plans to hijack the Saba Saba protests and incite chaos and looting, plans for which they are now being accused of orchestrating.

''They are accusing Mwangi of financing the past chaos and the coming Saba Saba protests. These accusations are false, malicious, and unfounded. Our political rivals are trying to taint the DCP Party," another leader who had accompanied the ex-boss revealed.

Mwangi has been fronted as an important leader in Nakuru, especially after he was endorsed for the county's top seat by elders from different communities in the county.

The elders said that after a long scrutiny,  they had settled on Mwangi as the most formidable person who would be able to champion the interests of all residents of Nakuru County.

The ex-NHIF boss has also been actively involved in the former DP Rigathi Gachagua-led party, DCP. He is expected to run for the gubernatorial seat under the party.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga has said that the NPS is yet to receive any notice about the planned June 7 protests dubbed Saba Saba Day.
