Four people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a trailer that lost control along the Suswa–Narok road near Nairekia Engare, close to the Standard Gauge Railway crossing.
The victims of the accident included two motorcyclists, a pedestrian, and a passenger who was aboard the ill-fated trailer.
According to preliminary reports, the trailer veered off its lane and rammed into three other vehicles, leaving a trail of destruction before coming to a stop.
The Motorists Association of Kenya confirmed the incident and urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while plying the busy Narok–Mai Mahiu highway. “Take care - Narok Mai Mahiu fatal road crash at Nairekia Engare near the SGR. Be alert,” the association warned in a statement posted online.
Following the incident, authorities responded to the scene to manage the situation, with investigations underway to establish the exact cause of the crash.
The Narok accident adds to the growing list of accidents on the highway, which has seen increased traffic and road carnages over the past few months.
On June 28, a senior police officer was among two people who died in a road accident that occurred at the Maduro area along the Narok–Mai Mahiu Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash happened when a long-distance trailer lost control and rammed into two private vehicles—a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring. They claimed the trailer’s brakes failed, leading to the deadly collision on the busy highway.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals by first responders, including Sikika Road Safety, a motorists' safety advocacy group that was among the first to raise the alarm over the crash.
The trailer collided head-on with a Toyota Prado driven by Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a senior officer at Narok Traffic Base.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, a multi-vehicle accident between Kinungi and Flyover caused a massive traffic jam that brought movement to a near standstill along the busy highway.
The incident led to a major snarl-up that lasted for hours, rendering a large section of the road impassable for most of the evening.
The situation was worsened by poor weather conditions, with thick fog and mist covering much of the stretch, as cold weather continues to affect visibility and driving conditions in the area.
