Traffic came to a halt along Nairobi's Waiyaki Way early Tuesday afternoon after a lorry overturned at the Brookside Drive junction, blocking the busy city-centre bound carriage just before the Westlands roundabout at The Mall.
The lorry overturned blocking several lanes of the road, rendering the busy section entirely impassable and triggering a massive traffic snarl-up that stretched for kilometres.
Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes, with many diverting via Muthangari Drive, Brookside Drive, and Karuna Close to bypass the extensive gridlock and eventually reconnect with Waiyaki Way past the affected junction, as efforts to clear the scene continued.
There have been no fatalities reported from the incident. However, the lorry driver's condition has not yet been reported.
According to reports, the truck involved in the accident was transporting sacks of chicken feed.
The truck was apparently hit by another truck carrying sand as it sped downhill toward Westlands, causing it to lose control.
Traffic police and emergency responders are on the scene managing the situation by removing the truck as at 3pm.
On March 4, 2024, traffic in the same region remained standstill after a lorry crashed into a traffic island separating the two lanes of the highway.
The lorry, which was ferrying construction workers from Westlands to Kangemi, veered off the road near the Expressway Exit, before hitting the median barrier.
Several people sustained injuries as the lorry overturned on the busy Waiyaki Way.
A few weeks ago, two people died and three others were injured in a road accident along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Kiongwani area, Makueni County.
The crash involved a pickup truck transporting avocados towards Nairobi and a fuel tanker heading in the opposite direction.
According to witnesses, the two vehicles collided head-on, killing two passengers who were in the pickup truck on the spot.
It is reported that the tanker and pickup drivers, however, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital before being referred to Makindu Level 5 Hospital for further treatment.
