The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a four-month closure of a section of the Mwingi-Ukasi (A3) Road in Kitui County, a move set to cause major traffic disruptions for motorists. The closure is meant to allow essential works on the road.

Effective from Monday, July 28, 2025, the affected section at 39+400 (Kwa-Vii area) will be fully inaccessible to traffic. The closure is projected to last until Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

According to KeNHA, the temporary shutdown is necessary to facilitate maintenance on the road and the construction of a new box culvert at the Kwa-Vii site.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that Mwingi - Ukasi (A3) Road shall be fully closed at KM 39+400 (Kwa-Vii) from Monday, July 28, 2025, to Wednesday, November 12, 2025," the notice reads.

According to KeNHA Acting Director General Luka Kimeli stated that the closure will affect the entire section of the road.

He advised motorists to use the designated diversion provided by the authority to keep the traffic flow smooth.

“This is to allow for the construction of a box culvert, and motorists are therefore advised to use the designated diversion as indicated in the diversion plan,” the authority said.

According to the authority, the affected area is along the Mwingi-Ukasi section of the A3 Road, which stretches from Thika to Liboi near the Kenya-Somali border.

The authority provided a traffic management plan to motorists traveling toward Mwingi and Ukasi.

Motorists are urged to cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers who will be deployed on site to ensure safety.

“Motorists are therefore advised to use the designated diversion as indicated in the diversion plan. KENHA advises motorists to exercise caution around the work areas, follow the proposed traffic management plan below, and cooperate with the traffic marshals on site,” KeNHA added.

In July 21,  the authority also announced the closure of partial road closure on a section of the Thika–Garissa (A3) Road for three months beginning from Saturday, July 26, 2025 to Saturday, November 8, 2025.
