All motorists have been advised on where to buy accessories after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) published its official August 2025 list of approved motor vehicle body builders, conformity assessors, and licensed speed limiter suppliers.

According to NTSA, the notice is in line with Section 4 of the NTSA Act No. 33 of 2012 and the Traffic Act (CAP 403), NTSA that mandates it to regulate and oversee road safety measures across the country.

One of NTSA’s responsibilities is to ensure that it enforces KS 2295:2023, a standard that outlines the guidelines for licensing companies that provide speed-limiting devices. The standards are necessary  for certain classes of vehicles to prevent overspeeding and reduce road carnages.

While implementing this move, NTSA approved 12 companies to supply speed limiters.

The companies were approved after they met the set requirements by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Chief Mechanical and Transport Engineer, and NTSA.

"The KS 2295:2023 provides for the Implementation of Guidelines for Licensing of Speed Limiter Suppliers," the notice reads in part.

NTSA also published 42 companies approved as motor vehicle body builders, as mandated by its standard requirements that direct approved body builders to maintain high standards in materials, engineering design, and workmanship.

The approved companies include A&G Automotive in Nyahururu, Associated Vehicle Assemblers Limited in Mombasa, and Kenya Coach Industries in Nairobi.

The approved body builders span across counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Machakos, Kisumu, Nyeri, and Meru, reflecting a nationwide distribution of certified builders.

A list of approved conformity assessors, whose role is to inspect and certify vehicle bodies for compliance, has also been published.

These assessors issue certificates of conformity and affix Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plates to indicate that the vehicle meets KS 372:2019 standards. Only two assessors, namely Al-Sahel Services Limited and Kenya Association of Bus Manufacturer Services Limited, have been approved for August 2025.

The approved list comes at a time when Kenya continues to struggle with road safety challenges, including rising road carnage rates. This approach by NTSA aims to curb these issues by promoting professionalism and standardisation in the automotive sector.

Motorists have been advised to visit the NTSA website for more information on licensing of body builders, conformity assessors, and speed limiter suppliers.
