The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued a reminder to all loanees about the importance of obtaining a Compliance Certificate.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 19, HELB explained that this document is a formal confirmation that a loanee is in good standing with their loan obligations.

The Compliance Certificate is a vital document for various applications and serves as proof of a loanee's repayment status. For individuals who have fully settled their loans, it acts as a clearance document. For those who are still in the repayment phase, it confirms that their payments are up-to-date.

Individuals who have never received a HELB loan will also receive this document to prove that they have no outstanding debt with the board. For loan recipients, the certificate shows that they are 'in compliance' with their loan agreement, meaning that they are meeting their financial commitments with regard to repaying the loan.

The certificate is crucial for several reasons. Many employers, especially in the public sector, require it during the hiring process to confirm a candidate’s financial integrity.

Beyond job applications, the document is often mandatory for accessing various government services and for professional body clearances.

It serves as proof of your financial responsibility and commitment to repaying your debts, which can be an important factor for credit checks.

A Clearance Certificate, on the other hand, is specifically for individuals who have paid off their entire loan. It is the final document an individual receives from HELB, serving as official proof that you have completely "cleared" your HELB debt and have no more financial obligations to the board.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a HELB Compliance Certificate

According to HELB, obtaining a HELB Compliance Certificate is a straightforward process that can be completed online through the Higher Education Fund (HEF) portal. HELB has provided the following simple steps for loan applicants to follow:

  • Register or Log In to the HEF Portal: Visit the HEF website and either create a new account or log in with your existing details.
  • Navigate to the "Self-serve" Tab: Once logged in, find the "Self-serve" option on the dashboard or main menu.
  • Click on "Compliance Certificate": Within the "Self-serve" section, you will find a link or button for "Compliance Certificate." Click on it.
  • Click on "Get Certificate": The portal will process your request, allowing you to instantly download your compliance certificate.

HELB encourages all loan recipients to regularly check their repayment status and to get this certificate whenever it is required.

For anyone facing difficulties accessing the portals, the board urges them to visit the HELB website at www.helb.co.ke or contact the HELB office at Anniversary Towers, University Way or contact them through their official contacts.
