The dualling of the Kisumu Boys–Mamboleo (A1) Road is nearing completion, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced.
In a statement released on Saturday, August 30, PS Omollo revealed that the 4.6 kilometre highway, will feature a modern dual carriageway with a main road, outer shoulders, service lanes, pedestrian and cycle tracks.
The project, constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), was aimed at the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the crucial highway that is crucial to the road and transport network in Kisumu.
“The dualling of the Kisumu Boys–Mamboleo (A1) Road, implemented by KeNHA, is nearing completion, marking a major boost to Kisumu's urban infrastructure,” Omollo stated.
“The project involved the rehabilitation and reconstruction of a 4.6-kilometre stretch of the A1 highway into a modern dual carriageway with a 7-metre-wide main road, 2.5-metre outer shoulders, 6-metre service lanes and 3-metre pedestrian and cycle tracks,” he added.
To ensure its rehabilitation and reconstruction, PS Omollo disclosed extensive works were undertaken including earthworks, upgrading of pavement layers, laying of cement-improved gravel and crushed stone bases, new asphalt surfacing, drainage improvements, as well as installation of street lighting and modern road furniture.
The key road is expected to improve the road and transport network in Kisumu, particularly in its Central Business District, as well as other economic activities.
“By improving connectivity between Mamboleo and the city centre, the new dual carriageway is expected to unlock opportunities for trade, investment and tourism, while making daily commutes safer and more efficient for thousands of residents and visitors,” PS Omollo noted.
The road had stalled from as far back as 2018, with the government citing budgetary constraints as the main reason behind the stalling of its construction.
Previously, the government had assured that the road would be completed by November 2021, only for a Chinese contractor charged with its reconstruction to walk out of the project.
Still, its imminent completion comes after a 30-day traffic disruption announced by KeNHA, with the Authority noting that the closure would happen between Thursday, August 7, to Friday, September 5.
Due to the diversion of traffic, KeNHA had urged motorists to follow a proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site.
The section to be affected was between the Kondele Roundabout on your way to Migosi to the Mamboleo Roundabout.
