The woman seen in a viral video violently assaulting two businesswomen with a wooden rod at Kibuye Market on November 17 has been arrested.
Police in Kisumu termed the incident a serious criminal attack, linking it to ongoing leadership disputes within the marketplace.
One of the women seen in the video was arrested while hiding in the market after the video sparked public outrage.
According to a police report filed at the Kondele Police Station, the incident occurred around 4pm, when two traders were holding a chama meeting near their stalls at Kibuye Market.
They told police that a group of ten individuals confronted them during the meeting and alleged that the market chairlady was leading the group.
Moments later, the group attacked the women, and the chairlady was armed with a wooden rod.
Both victims sustained serious injuries: one woman had wounds on her face, arms, shoulders, and back; the other had injuries on her ribs, back, arms, and shoulders.
They were rushed to Lumumba Sub-County Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), accompanied by the Kondele Police, responded to the incident and visited the scene, but found that the attackers had fled.
In a video obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the woman reportedly leading the market can be seen striking one of the victims while she lies helplessly on the ground.
Police stated that the woman was arrested and booked at Kisumu Railways Station and that additional charges may be filed once the investigation concludes.
The other members of the group who participated in the attack are still at large, and the Kondele police have vowed that they will all face the full force of the law.
The police stated that arraignments are ongoing and that the woman will be taken to court.
