Principal Secretary for Interior Raymond Omollo has defended the implementation of digital IDs, citing that it will aid in criminal investigations.

The PS cited this during the Third Forum on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence on November 25, 2025.

According to the PS, secure digital identity solutions will protect user privacy while preventing the dangers of harmful anonymity.

“Such systems preserve users' safety, while enabling lawful tracing of malicious activities without compromising on civil liberties or human rights", the PS said.”

He further stated that the move will help confront the growing challenge of anonymity that impedes investigations and frustrates accountability.

According to the PS, the anonymity complicates the presentation of digital evidence before courts of law.

He commended the judiciary's leading effort in digitizing its infrastructure compared to other arms of the government.

He also highlighted that cybercrimes did not respect national boundaries; therefore, when criminals operated across countries, governments had to cooperate swiftly while ensuring that the offenders’ right to a fair trial was protected.

"A cyber incident originating miles away can destabilize institutions here at home within minutes. This reality makes one point undeable; that our response must be coordinated, international and sustained," the PS said.

The PS reiterated that these partnerships were critical in building the technical capacity of the law enforcement agencies, ensuring they have modern forensic tools and the necessary skills to be able to investigate cyber crimes effectively.

Furthermore, he cited that the partnership will ease access to digital evidence as more partners will be willing to cooperate in the delivery of the necessary evidence.

He concluded his speech, by highlighting the need for cybersecurity awareness, especially among the youth, who often ignore the risks posed by big tech platforms, such as data harvesting.
