The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been recognised as the country's best-performing public institution after winning four national awards for excellence in financial reporting, accountability and public sector leadership at the 2025 Financial Reporting Awards (FiRe).

In a statement on Wednesday, December 10, the Kenya Defence Forces announced that the ministry had been recognised after receiving four major national awards for excellence in financial reporting, accountability, and public sector leadership.

The ministry also received two additional awards from the Office of the Head of Public Service: the Unmodified Audit Opinion Award and the Leadership in Driving the Public Service Transformation Agenda 2025 Award.

These were presented to Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya by Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru at the Defence Headquarters on Wednesday.

Appreciating the recognition, Tuya said that the award reflected the ministry's commitment to remain the leading horse in advocating for integrity, professionalism, and efficient resource management within the government.

“These awards affirm the Ministry of Defence’s unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and responsible stewardship of public resources. Our civilian and uniformed teams continue to demonstrate the highest standards of public service,” Tuya said.

On his hand, PS Mariru said that the award reflects the commitment the ministry has made to guarantee a strong governance system in the government.

“This is a Ministry-wide achievement. Our teams have successfully navigated complex public sector demands while steering critical government projects. I applaud the entire MoD fraternity for maintaining exemplary standards in all areas of service,” Mariru stated.

This comes days after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was awarded the Financial Reporting (FiRe) Award to recognise its performance in financial accountability and reporting.

The commission received the award after the commission received an unmodified (clean) audit opinion from the Office of the Auditor General for the 2024/2025 financial year.

EACC, Director of Finance and Planning, CPA Joel Mukumu, received the certificate of recognition on behalf of the Commission under the category Commissions and Independent Offices, International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) Accrual.

"The initiative is aimed at advancing excellence in financial reporting, strengthening corporate governance, and enhancing corporate, environmental, and social transparency practices across public, private, and other institutions in the region," EACC stated.
