In response to complaints from parents and stakeholders regarding Grade 10 placement, the Ministry of Education has permitted parents to request admission for Grade 10 learners at senior schools of their choice after a placement review.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, in a statement issued on Friday, January 2, announced that a second revision phase will take place from January 6 to 9.

Ogamba said the review period gives parents, guardians and learners an opportunity to seek a reassessment of initial or revised senior school placements under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

''As earlier indicated, interested learners will have a further opportunity to apply for review of their placement from 6th January, 2026, to 9th January, 2026. The revision will provide parents, guardians, and learners the opportunity to provide legitimate and verifiable grounds to justify a reconsideration of the initial or revised placement,'' the statement read in part.

The CS noted that the first revision of Grade 10 placements was concluded on December 29, 2025, and joining instructions for learners already placed have been available on the placement portal since December 30.

According to the ministry, the second revision phase will be limited to cases where parents and learners can provide legitimate and verifiable reasons for seeking a change of placement, as the government seeks to balance access to education with optimal use of available school spaces.

Ogamba explained that parents may initiate requests for further review through the learner’s junior school or directly at the senior school of interest, depending on the circumstances surrounding the application.

The requests will be submitted by heads of institutions through the placement portal and processed in line with protocols already issued by the Ministry of Education.

At the same time, the ministry confirmed that all basic education institutions will reopen for Term One of the 2026 academic year on Monday, January 5.

Regional Directors of Education and County Directors of Education have been tasked with monitoring school reopening and ensuring adherence to the official academic calendar.

The placement review process is part of the ongoing transition to the senior school level under the Competency-Based Curriculum, which introduced Grade 10 as the entry point to senior secondary education.

The ministry urged parents and guardians to use the official placement channels and timelines to avoid disruptions as schools begin the 2026 academic year.
