Audit Report Reveals Sh3 Billion is Unaccounted for at CS Nkaissery's Ministry of Interior

A report tabled by Auditor General Edward Ouko before the National Assembly on Wednesday indicates that over Sh3 Billion couldn't be accounted for in the Ministry of Interior headed by Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

According to the report, billions of shillings collected as revenue for various services in the last financial year could not be accounted for.

The money is said to have been lost at Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, the Immigration Department and various sub-county offices.

"The inspection at the DCI Headquarters indicated 543,108 Police Clearing Certificates were issued, out of which Sh542.19 Million was realised as application fees. However, the statement reflects a collection of Sh350.08 Million," reads the report.

This implies that around Sh192 Million could not be traced.

At the immigration department, the revenue statement reflects an amount of Sh2.63 Billion against visa and consular fees but receipts could not be verified at the immigration offices at Jomo Kenyatta and Moi International Airports.

The situation was similar at different sub-county headquarters as financial statements indicated that some government officials may have pocketed huge sums of money.

Kisumu Central Sub-County Administration Police Commander Office did not submit Sh4.4 million to the ministry, Kilifi recorded a Sh1.53 Million loss, Likoni had a deficit of Sh742,000 while Kwale sub-county AP commander's office Sh870,020 was unaccounted.
