Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on Tuesday picked Professor William Kazungu as his running mate.
According to reports, Prof Kazungu has been selected by the governor and would be officially unveiled on Thursday.
Prior to the appointment, Prof Kazungu was a lecturer and the head of the school of business at Mombasa Technical University.
Kazungu holds a PhD from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and also served as head of the secretariat of the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani.
Earlier speculations had indicated that the governor would pick a candidate from the larger Mijikenda community.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Joho’s Director of Communications Richard Chacha, stated that the governor would reveal his final choice before the end of the week.
Candidates from the community who had reportedly been fronted for the top seat were Francis Thoya and Education Executive Lewa Tend.
The revelation came hot on the heels of an announcement by his rival for the governor seat, Senator Hassan Omar who on Monday unveiled Linda Shuma as his running mate.
Omar had in the presser held at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel, exuded confidence that his choice would beat the incumbent governor for the top job.
