Garbage Heaped at Nyeri Governor's Office Ahead of State Madaraka Day Celebrations in the County

Just a day to the Madaraka Day Celebrations scheduled to take place at Kabiruini grounds in Nyeri County led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, reports indicate that littered garbage is stinking up the town.

The situation is reported to be dire with heaps mounded up right next to the governor's offices, clogging up the drainage system that leads out from the building.

Plastic bags, bottles and mud are said to have blocked most of the drainage in the town causing a widespread bad odour throughout the town.

Residents claim that the County Government is to blame for having failed to collect garbage for a long time.

"The garbage has not been collected for weeks and the stench is even worse now that the rains are here," Joseph Karanja, a taxi driver in the town explained.

The potential health risk is not a new problem as residents say that they have always complained and are now used to it.

County Director of Environment John Mugenyo admitted that the administration has been experiencing difficulty with garbage collection and had acquired new equipment to help with clearing the heaps before Thursday.

"We have intensified the garbage collection efforts and added three more vehicles to speed up the collection," he noted.

Governor Samuel Wamathai reiterated the sentiments and assured that the operation will be complete by the end of the day today.

"I assure you the town will be garbage -free by the end of the day," he reiterated.
