Bank Robberies at Nairobi's Mashreq Bank Where Thieves Sang Christian Hymns to Hostages

The country has in the past witnessed weird incidents that have remained on the lips of many for years.

One of such is a bank heist that was witnessed a few years ago at Mashreq Bank that was along Kenyatta Avenue, where two robberies took place barely two months apart.

During the incidents, the robbers stormed the banking hall and took several hostages, but the funny bit is that they entertained the victims with Christian hymns as they emptied their pockets.

The first robbery took place on July 1, 1999, when assailants stormed the branch at noon and made away with Sh500,000.

According to witnesses, one of the robbers who was guarding the hostages started belting out the hymn "Abide With Me" and his singing grew louder and louder as the robbery progressed.

Bewildered staff members, security guards and customers sought to understand why he was singing and he graciously explained that the song was meant to calm him down.

Moments later, the other gangsters joined in clapping, dancing and in a sadistic twist "collected an offering" from the customers who walked into the premises as they sang: "Toa ndugu, toa dada ulichonacho wewe...(Give, brother, give sister whatever you have)" and "Toa, toa sadaka yako, umtolee Bwana Mungu wako...(Give, give your offering to God)".

The second robbery went down on the morning of August 17, 1999, when the robbers managed to get away with close to Sh9 Million.

According to a report by the Standard, the thugs, after the robbery, invited the hostages to a party.

"They even gave the venue of the party! The invitation seemed like a jab in the ribs for the terrified staff, who watched as the men said they were now rich and could afford to throw a party for everyone," the report read in part.
