8 Patients Die at Coast General Hospital and in Samburu as Nurses Strike Continues

Eight people have been confirmed dead as many others continue to suffer in public hospitals following the nationwide strike that kicked off on Monday.

The Coast General Hospital was the worst hit with seven people dying followed by Samburu County which had one victim.

In other regions patients who had been admitted were discharged in their different conditions and asked to seek medical assistance elsewhere.

At the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital in Nakuru, patients who had traveled from far were told to return home or seek services in private facilities.

In Embu all the 680 nurses working in public hospitals boycotted work.

In Kirinyaga County, 51 critically ill inpatients at the Kerugoya Level Five Hospital were left unattended.

Major services were also not being offered at Elburgon, Gilgil, Njoro, and Bahati hospitals in Rift Valley. The hospitals are manned by administrators and clinical officers with the assistance of voluntary health care workers.

Meanwhile, divisions have emerged in the nurses' union as officials disagree on the legality of the strike. On Tuesday, the Union Chairperson Mr John Bii termed the strike illegal and accused his Secretary General Seth Panyako of being a stumbling block to the negotiations between the health workers and the Council of Governors (COG).

The nurses went on strike on Monday after they accused County Governments of not fulfilling their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

By Tuesday evening, there was no indication of the strike ending as the Salaries and Remuneration Commission blamed governors for the stalemate whereas the County bosses claimed that they had no money to pay the nurses.
