Mandera County Governor Ali Roba Reveals Why Al Shabab Want Him Dead

Mandera County Governor Ali Roba has revealed the reasons why the Al Shabaab insurgents have threatened to kill him and increased attacks against him over the past weeks.

Speaking to a local daily Governor Roba revealed that the Al Shabaab had through a WhatsApp message vowed to kill him.

Roba stated that the sporadic attacks against his convoy and the county were brought about by his stance against the militants and the changes he introduced to fight against their terror cells in the county.

He said that before the threats on WhatsApp, he had challenged the status quo in the county that had been overrun by the militants by improving the security apparatuses in the county.

“Normally, you follow the discussions in Somalia and you realise the terrorists don’t like people talking about them. The attacks happen but people don’t talk about it. The initial attacks on me were motivated by those efforts against the terrorists,” said Roba

The Governor said that the militants operated by spreading fear and institutionalising silence but after the 2013 General Election, he hired six vehicles to bolster security operations.

This, he said boosted security but after six months before the terror cells found out that there was no radio communication and attacked.

Roba added that the Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) and local askaris changed tack and forced the militants and their cells to retreat but were now plotting for his death for disrupting their operations in the county.
