3 Presidential Aspirants Yet to Pick Security from Police Headquarters

Three presidential candidates battling to oust President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 polls are yet to pick the security detail assigned to them by the Police Headquarters.

According to an official privy to the issue, the three had been contacted to pick their security detail but were yet to do so.

The source revealed that one presidential candidate had declined the offer and stated that he was protected by God.

“One candidate said he is protected by God while the other two keep promising they would come,” he said.

He added that the three were jeopardising their own security despite being cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for the top job.

The police were urging the three to get their allocation of security considering that Article 138(8)(b) of the Constitution stipulates that: “A presidential election shall be cancelled and a new election held if a candidate for the election as President or Deputy President dies on or before the scheduled election date.”

Raila Odinga had in the past week accused the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet of denying him adequate security.

Odinga had demanded that he be allocated up to 50 bodyguards, a request that was turned down with Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery noting that the police would only be guided by law in how they allocate security.
