4 MPs Decline Offer to Step Down President Uhuru Kenyatta as Uhuru Tours Kericho

A stand-off is awaiting President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto as he tours Kericho County on Thursday after four MPs running as independents vowed not to shelve their bids.

The MPs, Eric Keter (Belgut), Benjamin Lang’at (Ainamoi), Jackson Rop (Kipkelion West) and Leonard Sang (Bureti), claimed they lost unfairly and would not step down to support Jubilee candidates despite being promised posts in government.

The four termed North Rift politicians who visited Kericho last week, ahead of the president’s visit as “hypocrites and political tourists”.

“Those who think we are in the opposition are misguided. It will not be smooth sailing for them. We support the government more than they do,” said Lang’at.

Lang'at castigated Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Nandi Hills lawmaker Alfred Keter noting that they had no courtesy, integrity or the moral authority to tell Kericho people whom to elect.

He reiterated that they do not support calls by Jubilee leaders that they should back those who won in the primaries.

“We lost unfairly to those who were given the JP ticket. This will be proved if Kericho voters are allowed to decide on their leaders,” noted the legislator.

The four highlighted that they backed Uhuru’s reelection and sought his blessings to vie and not be compelled to step down.

President Kenyatta and DP Ruto will tour Bomet County tomorrow.
