Mombasa, Kilifi and Nyeri Counties Stinking Garbage Heaps Cause Unrest Among Businessmen and County Officials

Media reports have indicated that Mombasa, Kilifi and Nyeri Counties are among the filthiest counties where garbage heaps have been left to pile up and stink up the streets.

Nyeri County has made news for the stinking mess since 2016 when residents expressed fear that their health may be at risk as a result of failed attempts to have the County Government clear the garbage.

Residents continue to blame the County Administration for not collecting the garbage even after heaps were mounded up right next to the governor's offices ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations that were held there this month.

The situation is likely to persist as county workers downed their tools this week over unpaid dues.

Hoteliers in Mombasa and Kilifi counties have also raised a concern that the rotting garbage in the county streets is likely to affect tourism as the industry heads for it's peak season.

The Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) issued a statement on the matter yesterday calling for immediate action.

"In every corner of the town you travel, you are hit by sickening smell of rotting garbage or sewage emptied into storm-water drainage system.

"For Mombasa to attract more holidaymakers, the city must be kept clean. The high season is just the corner and it is our wish that the county chiefs address the solid waste challenge," observed Mr Sam Ikwaye, the association's Coast branch executive.
