Nakuru County Government Lays Off 400 Casual Labourers

The Nakuru County Government laid off 400 casual labourers on Monday.

This was after Chief Officer of Public Service P.K. Sigei gave the orders through a letter directed to all sub-county administrators.

"All sub-county administrators have been directed to disengage the services of the casuals.

"In order to avoid debts in form of casual wages, I am directing you to disengage any casual labourer working under you with effect from June 30, 2017," the letter read.

Among those affected were Enforcement and Environment Officers who had worked at the defunct municipality for over 10 years.

The sacking of the 400 employees comes a week after the county's public service board hired 130 enforcement officers.

The affected casuals claimed they should have been the first people to be considered for employment, adding that they would move to the Labour Relations Court to stop the sacking.

Lakeview MCA Simon Wanyoike stated that the Labour Committee in the County Assembly had stopped the recruitment.

Last week, County Secretary Joseph Motari confirmed the hiring noting that Governor Kinuthia Mbugua had tried to stop the exercise to no avail.

"The governor a couple of months back stopped the hiring of staff but we also have information that this exercise is going on," he said.
