Nandi IDPs Demand Compensation, Threaten to Vote Out President Uhuru Kenyatta

A group of over 5,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Deputy President William Ruto's backyard of Nandi County has threatened to vote out President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The IDPs, while speaking to a local daily on Monday, vowed to vote against Uhuru and Ruto if the Jubilee government does not compensate them before the August 8th General Election.

The group composed of 2007/2008 post-election violence victims noted that they had to be compensated for the suffering and losses they incurred during the chaos and forest evictions.

The team mentioned that other IDPs from other regions had been compensated and accused the Jubilee administration of failing to fulfil a promise to compensate them in two weeks time during their recent tour of the county.

Earlier this month, President Kenyatta during a tour of the county assured the residents that the government would start paying the IDPs soonest.

The President even promised to send Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett to issue the IDPs with cheques.

“I will send Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett to come and issue cheques for the integrated IDPS here in this County,” President Kenyatta stated.

Earlier this month, President Kenyatta, while visiting Kisii and Nyamira Counties, handed over Kshs828 Million as compensation for IDPs. Kisii received Sh358 Million while IDPs from Nyamira got Sh470 Million.

He further promised to ensure that the remaining IDPS in all other counties would also benefit in due course as the Jubilee administration stepped up efforts to address the challenge.

“We are determined to ensure that no IDP will be left uncompensated. We have embarked on a journey to ensure that we bury that challenge once and for all,” the President stated.
