Court Orders Mental Evaluation Exam for Nakumatt Supermarket Transport Manager

Justice Jessie Lessit on Monday ordered a mandatory mental evaluation test for a Transport Manager at the Nakumatt Holdings chain of supermarkets.

The order was issued in the case where the Manager, Steve Abdul Kairo, is accused of having shot and killed a subordinate staff member, 23-year-old Mr Stephen Wafula Musumbi, at the company's headquarters in Industrial Area, Nairobi.

Witnesses reported that Mr Kairo, a licenced gun holder, attacked the murder victim with a panga before proceeding to shoot him.

The judge would not allow him to take a plea during the court proceedings and instead ordered that the Nakumatt boss be taken into custody for a week and undergo the mental evaluation at the Mathari Mental Referral Hospital to ascertain he was mentally stable.

The case will be heard on July 17 where the murder weapon will be presented as evidence.

Another murder case involving the company is also in court where witnesses revealed that police were paid Sh80,000 to murder a former Nakumatt Chief Accountant, James Karanja Maina.
