US Congress Proposes New Guidelines to Ensure Credible Elections in Kenya

The United States (US) Congress has asked Kenya to ensure the elections are free, credible and transparent.

On Monday, Congress expressed concerns over delayed preparations by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) barely 20 days to the polls.

Through Representative Eliot Engel, the Congress proposed the assistance by the US State Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in preparing for the August 8 election.

It also proposed the participation of the civil society in ensuring a peaceful pre and post-election environment in the country.

This will be achieved by providing critical early warning and response measures to avert election-related violence.

Engel further asked the government and political parties to ensure Kenyans participate in a process that allows them to have confidence in the accuracy of the results.

“We call on the ruling party, opposition parties and the electoral commission to ensure the election is transparent,” he said.

“We're introducing [these measures] because we consider Kenya a strategic partner for the United States and because of the potential for these elections to have far-reaching implications across the continent," Engel stated.

The official noted Kenya and the US remain key partners in promoting regional security.
