President Uhuru Kenyatta has stated that National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders are using the Mombasa Port to smuggle drugs into the country.
Speaking on Tuesday during a campaign tour of Coast, President Kenyatta noted that the port was a hub of illegal trade and storage of contraband that was being distributed in the local market.
"Unajua hawa watu wa vitendawili wamezoea ile kazi ya kuleta mizigo na madawa ya kulevya hapa kwa port, tunaelewana?..(These people who like using proverbs have been importing goods and drugs into the country through this port," Uhuru stated in an indirect reference to the Opposition leaders.
President Kenyatta made the remarks after Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho expressed public objections to the construction of the Naivasha dry port.
"Ati ndio wasilipe customs... hio ndio biashara yao ya kuleta mizigo ili wasilipe ushuru na wauzie Wakenya huku. Ndiposa unaona haja yao sana ni hio port. Sisi tumewambia hio biashara imeisha.”
Loosely translated: "They use this port so that they don't pay customs fees. They don't pay tax on imported goods sold to Kenyans. That is why they target this port. We have told them that business is over,” Uhuru added.
In a quick rejoinder, the Mombasa Governor accused the government of politicising the war against drugs in the country.
The Governor addressed a press conference on Tuesday where he warned Jubilee against linking him to drug trafficking in the region.
"Jubilee should first clear their house first before coming here to talk about drugs. This is just for campaigning and nothing else," he stated.
Joho referred back to an investigation conducted years ago that exonerated him from the drug trade assuring that the recent allegations would not deter his campaigns.
"The narrative that I am a drug dealer was peddled in 2013 to deny me a chance to vie. We are seeing the same narrative being driven now. I am telling you I will be on the ballot,” he affirmed.
