IEBC to Meet Political Parties Over Polling Station Agents

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday invited all political parties including Jubilee and ODM to a special meeting on Wednesday, July 26.

The meeting will involve a detailed discussion on the rules concerning polling station agents.

According to IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba, the meeting is in an effort to clarify the number of agents it will allow in each polling centre, during next month’s General Election.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and the National Super Alliance (NASA) are currently locked in a stalemate over the issue.

In May, NASA stated that it will deploy five agents to every polling station in what they dubbed the adopt a polling station programme.

The Opposition asked IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to support the move, to which he maintained that the electoral laws provided for only one party agent per polling station.

Dr Matiang'i, last week, also opposed NASA's proposal when he stated that protection of candidate votes is the sole responsibility of the security detail and the IEBC.

"The protection of ballot is our responsibility with the IEBC and we have not asked anyone for help.

"Anyone who is not mentioned in the circular should be removed from the polling stations by all means possible," Dr Matiang'i warned in his statement.

NASA has continued to insist that their adopt a polling station initiative will proceed as planned.

"Mr Matiang’i has particularly attacked our plans which we will continue with and ensure other than our polling agents, we will have volunteers and supporters of NASA who are adopting polling stations," stated Siaya Senator James Orengo on behalf of the Opposition.
