Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Tuesday evening stormed a live interview on KTN News accompanied by his supporters.
The fracas brought the proceedings to a standstill, agitating the news crew who were set up at the Mulu Mutisya Grounds, a popular campaign venue for politicians.
Governor Mutua had reportedly been invited for the interview but when he did not confirm his attendance, the programmers blotted him out of the schedule.
Explaining why he abruptly appeared, the Governor claimed to have received reports that his supporters were heading to the venue to interrupt the session and attack the KTN crew.
"I was in my office when I received reports that people were going to attack the KTN team, so I switched on the TV and saw that people were bashing me in my own backyard and there was no one invited to speak on my behalf," the Governor told Mashirima Kapombe, who was moderating the interview.
Earlier on, the crew had conducted an informal poll where members of the public voted for the issues they felt Dr Mutua's administration had failed at.
A majority of the poll participants overwhelmingly voted that the Governor's administration had escalated levels of corruption in the county.
An invited commentator, Dr Jimmy Mutunga, further fueled the anti-Mutua sentiments in his assessment of the Governor's tenure.
"Mutua has done the work he is good at and that is public relations. He came up with a manifesto that did not involve the people of Machakos. This is the only county in Kenya where we had a presidential function to officially unveil public toilets," Dr Mutunga stated, sparking laughter among the citizens present at the set.
The Governor insisted that it is Dr Mutunga's sentiments that angered his supporters and that the organizers of the interview should have done a better job of reaching him instead of sending a text message.
