John Mwirigi: Igembe South Parliamentary Aspirant Who Had No Posters

History might be in the making in Igembe South as parliamentary aspirant John Mwirigi could become the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in the region on an Independent ticket.

At just 23-years old, Mwirigi is leading with 19,366 votes (39,39%) while his closest rival Joseph Miriti of Jubilee Party is second with 15,977 votes (32,50%).

He is an orphan who went to a day school through well-wishers and never dished out money during campaigns.

He promised residents that once elected he would build roads, supply water and invest in education noting how challenging it was for him to get education.

According to a source from the constituency, he wasn’t a favourite in the race but his victory could be attributed to the door-to-door campaigns he did.

He also campaigned using boda-bodas.

Meru County also produced the youngest Member of Parliament in the 11th Parliament.

At the tender age of 26, Boniface Kinoti Gatobu was elected in the 2013 election to represent Buuri Constituency.

Latest developments in the governorship race indicate that veteran politician Kiraitu Murungi is leading with 271,140 votes (52,27%) compared to incumbent Peter Munya's 221,591 votes (42,71%).
