A former police officer who served as Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua's bodyguard for 10 years is set to become Kitui East Member of Parliament (MP).
Nimrod Mbithuka Mbai won the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket beating the incumbent MP, Marcus Mutua Muluvi, who was vying on a Wiper Party ticket by a wide margin.
Mr Mbai garnered 14,256 votes against his closest rival Militonic Kitute of Narc party who got 10,899 votes. Mr Muluvi came a distant fourth with 5,436 votes.
In 1998, Mbai had been assigned as bodyguard to then Environment Minister Francis Nyenze
His daily routine included escorting Mr Nyenze from his residence to Parliament and to his various engagements as a cabinet minister.
After Mr Nyenze lost in the 2002 elections, Mbai became Dr Mutua's aide after the Governor was appointed the Government spokesman.
In 2013, the officer resigned from the police service, paving way for Dr Mutua to appoint him as one of his chief officers.
In this position, he was in charge of Executive services at the Machakos Governor's office.
Earlier, he had served as chief officer in charge of decentralized units, urban centres and Municipalities and that of Agriculture, livestock and Fisheries Development.
