5 Senators Who have Unseated Incumbent Governors

25 incumbent Governors have been sent home after losing in the just-concluded August polls. Out of those, five were unseated by senators in their respective counties.

Kenyans.co.ke has collated the list of senators who have defeated the incumbent governors during the polls.

1. Mike Sonko

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has beaten incumbent governor Evans Kidero in what was a hotly contested race.

The Jubilee governor- elect garnered 836,502 votes against the ODM governor who came second with 670,321 votes.

2. Kiraitu Murungi

Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi trounced incumbent Governor Peter Munya who was vying on a PNU party ticket.

Jubilee Party's Kiraitu got 278,383 votes while Munya garnered 230,618 votes.

The incumbent has, however, disputed the results declaring that he has been rigged out.

3. John Lonyangapuo

West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo clinched the county’s governor seat from incumbent Governor Simon Kachapin of Jubilee.

Kachapin, who had decamped from KANU before the election, only garnered 61,126 votes against the senator who got 83,813 votes.

4. Stephen Sang

Senator Stephen Sang is set to become the next governor for Nandi County.

Sang, who became the Jubilee candidate after beating Governor Cleophas Lagas Kiprop in the party nomination, was highly favoured to win after the incumbent pledged to support him.

The senator won with an overwhelming 91 percent of the support with 241,858 votes against his closest rival Anderson Serem who garnered 13,075 votes.

5. Anyang' Nyong'o

ODM Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o is set to unseat incumbent governor Jack Ranguma who was looking to defend his Kisumu Gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate.

With 94 percent of the votes, Nyong’o was leading with 263,995 votes against Ranguma’s 150,571 votes.

On the other hand, there are some senators who weren’t as fortunate to win the governorship seat.

In Mombasa county, Senator Hassan Omar lost to ODM’s Ali Hassan Joho coming in a distant third against the incumbent.

Turkana Senator John Munyes, who was vying on a Jubilee ticket, lost to Governor Josphat Nanok of ODM.

Senator James Mungai lost the Nakuru Governor seat to Former National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) Chairman Lee Maiyani Kinyanjui.

Kitui Senator David Musila was floored by former Cabinet Minister and NARC Party leader Charity Ngilu, while Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti lost to incumbent Martin Wambora of Jubilee.
