CS Fred Matiang'i Lifts Suspension of AfriCOG and Kenya Human Rights Commission

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has intervened in the ongoing standoff between the Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG), the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the NGOs Coordination Board.

In a letter to the Executive Director of the NGO Coordination Board Fazul Mahamed, Matiang'i noted that he had received several concerns and petitions from stakeholders and had arrived at the decision that before any conclusive action is made, comprehensive and exhaustive engagements needed to happen.

"I direct the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Security to immediately form an inclusive and representative committee to investigate the matter.

"In the meantime, I direct that while this is happening you suspend any action on these organisations for up to 90 days," Matiang'i's statement read in part.

The statement came as detectives from the police and the KRA were at AfriCOG offices attempting to conduct a raid.
