Kisumu Governor-elect Anyang Nyong’o Rejects Sh12 Million Set Aside for Inauguration

Opposition supporters who were injured in Kisumu during post-election protests last week have been allocated millions after Governor-elect Anyang' Nyong’o cut down the Sh12 Million allocated to him for his swearing-in ceremony.

Prof. Nyong’o said the money should be used to help needy people in his county as well as cater for hospital bills of people who were hurt during post-election demonstrations.

He noted many residents were seriously injured during the protests and need food and medicine.

Through his campaign manager Nerry Achar, Prof. Nyong'o on Friday said that Sh1 Million will be used for transport, water and sodas during the ceremony.

Noting the swearing-in is funded by the government, Achar said the incoming county boss does not want money wasted.

He said Sh1 Million should be enough for any public function.

"The venue is ours so Nyong’o felt we should not waste it because it is not necessary to spend Sh12 million," the manager said, adding this was the budget the transition committee gave the Devolution ministry.

Nyong’o has set up a tent at Kisumu sports grounds where victims of police brutality can record their details.

His swearing-in ceremony is set for Monday and will take place from 8 am to 1 pm at Kenyatta sports grounds in Kisumu City.

The outgoing Senator will be sworn in alongside Deputy Governor-elect Mathews Owili.
